5 Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp as You Age

“Why am I in the kitchen? I have no idea. Breakfast is finished and the dishes have been loaded, but something brought me back into my morning hangout spot, and I truly can’t remember what it was.” If you’ve ever walked into a room and immediately forgotten why you were there, don’t worry, you’re not alone. It’s a universal experience that tends to happen more often as the birthday candles start piling up. But guess what? Forgetting where you left your keys (again) doesn’t have to be your daily reality. With the right strategies, a dash of humor, and a willingness to try new things, you can keep your brain sharp as a tack, no matter how many times you’ve circled the sun.

1. Puzzles Anyone?

Believe it or not, no matter our age, our brains love a good challenge and something as simple as a puzzle, a crossword or Sudoku can all give our noggins a serious workout. I like to think of it as cardio for the cranium (without the stinky gym). Maybe that’s why I went back into the kitchen? Because it’s a great place to get the brain working early.

I really enjoy doing crossword puzzles from the newspaper or on the phone, and I promise myself every morning not to Google the answers. My mother and I loved doing jigsaw puzzles together when I was growing up, so they bring back great memories for me. After Christmas last year, I picked up a really nice 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle for kids based on The Polar Express. I started working on it in the spring all by myself, and it was amazing how much fun it was! I’ll be looking for another one soon.

Below is a fun compilation of activities that are lots of fun and will keep your brain sharp. You’ll find a variety of games and challenges designed to keep your neurons firing on all cylinders.

2. Learn Something New, Yes NOW

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? (Not that I’m calling you an old dog, of course, just borrowing the expression!). But research has proven that picking up a new skill, whether it’s painting, knitting, playing a musical instrument, or mastering a new language keeps your brain in active learning mode.

Thanks to the internet, you can now learn to speak Italian or practice digital photography without leaving your couch, unless you want to take pictures of something other than your living room wall.  If you prefer face-to-face interaction, look for community centers or adult education classes. It’s also a great way to socialize while you learn.

3. Stay Social (and Keep the Laughter Flowing)

Remember how we warned our kids not to “talk to strangers”? Well, as adults, we know that striking up conversations with people, whether friends or friendly new faces, can be fantastic for our mental health. Social interaction helps reduce isolation and depression, both of which can negatively impact our cognitive function.  Here are a couple of ideas to get you started:

1.    Seek out activities at senior centers.

2.    Join a club.

3.    Start a book club.

4.    Create a monthly Zoom call with old friends from around the country.

5.    Research volunteer opportunities, as you will find the experiences not only benefit the recipient but enrich your life as well!

6.    Find reasons to laugh. Whether it be from a sitcom on television, a phone conversation with an old or new friend, or anything you see funny as you go about your day. Then tell someone else about it, which will give you a second chance to giggle.

4. Move That Body!

OK, so what’s physical exercise got to do with my brain?, you may be asking. Well, a lot! Physical exercise isn’t just about keeping your muscles strong, it’s also a gift to your cranium. When you get your blood pumping, you’re sending oxygen and nutrients to your brain, which can improve memory, focus, and overall cognitive function.

An easy, and enjoyable, physical exercise might just be a leisure stroll around the block (plus, you might pick up some interesting neighborhood gossip er . . . I mean, see some interesting scenery). Dance is also amazing and a lot of fun, so crank up your favorite tunes at home and shake what your mama gave you.

5. Feed Your Brain (Literally)

Hold on. I’m not talking about opening your skull and stuffing it with meat and potatoes, but your diet does play a significant role in brain health. Think of your brain as a high-performance machine and to keep it running efficiently you must keep its tank filled with high-quality fuels like:

  • Leafy greens including spinach and kale
  • Fruits of all types
  • Nuts and berries – walnuts, almonds, blueberries, and strawberries are all top contenders for boosting brainpower.
  • Hydration – Keep a water bottle handy and sip throughout the day.

BONUS TIP – Practice Mindfulness & Relaxation

Some of us find life a little more stressful as we age, and we have to take steps to make a change. If not, it may affect our health. Constant worry can impair memory, focus, and even sleep quality. So, give your mind a break by practicing mindfulness or relaxation techniques, like meditation, yoga or tai chi and journaling.

If you want to keep your brain sharp as you age, it isn’t about avoiding every little lapse in memory. Let’s face it, sometimes you’ll still forget where you put your reading glasses (hint: check your head).

It’s about embracing a lifestyle that challenges your mind, nourishes your body, and keeps you connected to the world around you. Whether you’re solving puzzles, learning a new language, or simply laughing over brunch with friends, every effort you make helps build a healthier, happier, and sharper you.
