I have been fortunate to travel the globe for more than five decades, and there’s something truly empowering about traveling alone. It’s an opportunity to embrace freedom, independence, and self-discovery, especially after 50.
Gone are the days when solo travel was only for young backpackers or business professionals. More women than ever are exploring the world solo, and loving it!
But let’s be real, traveling alone comes with a different set of challenges. From safety concerns to planning logistics, it’s natural to feel excited and a little nervous.
The good news? With the right mindset, preparation, and a few travel-savvy tricks, you can explore the world with confidence, joy, and ease.
Ready to pack your bags? Let’s go!
Why Solo Travel After 50 is So Empowering
There’s something magical about traveling alone. You first of all have the opportunity to plan YOUR dream trip, and by navigating a new place solo, you'll gain travel confidence and independence. One of my favorite parts is that I don't have to worry about anyone but myself so no compromising on sightseeing, restaurants, or schedules! I can do what I want, when I want - it's perfect!
I also love meeting incredible people when traveling alone. Of course we must be super vigilant about strangers, at home and around the world,. That being said, traveling solo gives us the opportunity to meet new people, and you'll find that people are kind everywhere you go.
If you're stressed prior to departing on your solo trip, a beach-retreat or cultural escape is the ultimate in self-care.
Plan Smart: Setting Yourself Up for a Stress-Free Trip
Not all destinations are equally solo-travel-friendly. Start with places known for being safe, welcoming, and easy to navigate. Traveling alone as a woman can be one of the most liberating and empowering experiences in life. However, with freedom comes safety concerns. It is essential to recognize that a safe destination doesn’t guarantee safety, nor does it mean crime is nonexistent. Wherever you go – solo or not – travelers will “encounter different cultural norms that make you uncomfortable,” said Kiersten Rich aka The Blonde Abroad.
Book Accommodations in Safe Areas
Choose centrally located hotels or boutique stays with good reviews.
Opt for places with 24-hour front desks for extra security.
Try women-only hostels or hotels for added peace of mind.
Stay Safe Without Stressing
Solo travel doesn’t have to feel risky—it’s all about being prepared and aware.
